Stem cell 'first aid' for rat stroke

Stem cells given in the vital period immediately after a stroke may aid recovery, suggest researchers.

Rats injected with stem cells 30 minutes after a stroke had almost normal brain function restored within a fortnight.

The Bolivian research team say the method has potential in human trials.

Current best practice is to treat many patients with "clot-busting" drugs in the "golden hour" after a stroke has taken place.

The research, published in the journal Stem Cell Research and Therapy, adds to others which have found that stem cells could aid stroke patients by boosting the body's ability to repair tissue damage.

Stem cells are the body's "master cells", with the potential to become many different cell types, and theoretically replace cells lost through disease or injury.

Recent tests in humans have show some promise, with stroke symptoms improving after an infusion of stem cells.

?Start Quote

Stem cells are an incredibly interesting area of stroke research.?

End Quote Dr Clare Walton Stroke Association

The Bolivian team, from La Paz University Hospital, extracted a certain type of stem cells from fat and bone marrow, then injected them into the blood vessels of rats shortly after they had suffered an artificially-induced stroke.

Even though the introduced cells did not appear to travel to the affected region of the brain, the rats still did better than other rats who did not receive the cells.

Within 24 hours, they were already showing a speedier recovery, and two weeks later, they registered almost normal scores on behavioural tests.

Easy to use

The researchers said the early introduction of the cells might even interrupt the typical "chain reaction" of tissue damage which follows a stroke, in which the initial injury harms additional cells in surrounding areas.

Dr Exuperio Diez-Tejedor, who led the research, said: "Improved recovery was seen regardless of origin of the stem cells, which may increase the usefulness of this treatment in human trials.

"Adipose (fat) -derived cells in particular are abundant and easy to collect without invasive surgery."

The ease of collection, and the ability to use "allogenic" cells from other rats rather than having to harvest the animal's own cells and culture them, meant a treatment was available not weeks after a stroke, when the damage was done, but in this case minutes.

They wrote: "From the viewpoint of clinical translation allogenic stem cells are attractive because they can be easily obtained from young healthy donors, amplified, and stored for immediate use when needed after a stroke."

They suggested that it might be possible to overcome the risk of immune rejection of the donor cells in humans.

However, a spokesman for the Stroke Association said that human trials of this particular technique would not be possible in the near future.

Dr Clare Walton said: "Stem cells are an incredibly interesting area of stroke research and the results of this study provide further insight into their potential use for stroke recovery.

"However, we are a long way off these types of treatments being used in humans and a lot more research is needed."

TV veteran developing news show for Fuse

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Fuse television network has turned to news veteran Rick Kaplan, who has run CNN and MSNBC and produced programs like "Nightline," to develop a music news program aimed largely at people some 40 years younger than him.

"Fuse News" is set to debut Feb. 6 at 8 p.m. Eastern time with pre-Grammy Awards coverage. The half-hour show, originating from Fuse's studios across from Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, will be repeated at midnight.

"A lot of people are covering music in different ways," said Mike Bair, president of MSG Media, Fuse's corporate ownership. "But not a lot of people are covering it deeper and in a respectful way. We thought there was a real opportunity for us."

Fuse, available in some 70 million homes, is overshadowed by MTV, but unlike its competitor has kept its focus on music and is looking for a signature show.

Kaplan, 65, walked through a busy newsroom with TVs tuned to a Fuse countdown of sexy rap videos one recent afternoon. The 47-time Emmy winner had most recently produced Katie Couric's "CBS Evening News" and Christiane Amanpour's stint on ABC's Sunday morning and has formed his own consulting company.

Bair reached out to Kaplan through a mutual friend to gauge interest, and the idea intrigued Kaplan.

"While he's not in the target audience for Fuse (the network's median age is around 27), I think he also saw the opportunity," Bair said.

A whiteboard in Fuse's office already lists story plans for the first month. The collapse of the traditional music industry has made for many changes ripe for examining.

One future story will talk about bands scalping tickets to their own concerts, another about the sound quality issues behind the resurgence of vinyl. If "Fuse News" was on the air last week, it wouldn't treat the story about Beyonce lip-synching at the inauguration as a joke, but rather look into how widespread the practice is, Kaplan said.

"I want it to be a place where if you're involved in the industry in any way ? and that means anybody with a headset ? this will be the place where you will want to go," Kaplan said.

Kaplan's tastes run to the Eagles, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Now he's learning about electronic dance music, and even liking some of it. Liz Walaszczyk, a 28-year-old producer and contributing correspondent on "Fuse News," is gently introducing her boss to bands like the Xx.

And he's introducing her to the news.

Walaszczyk, who booked bands for Carson Daly's NBC show before joining Fuse, said that she finds blogs like Pitchfork and Stereogum helpful but that there's a void in serious music journalism. Kaplan is teaching her the importance of detail in every question asked and picture selected for her stories.

"I hear his voice and I think, 'This man has spoken to so many legends,'" she said.

Co-anchors for the show are Alexa Chung and Matte Babel. Former Gawker writer Elaine Moran and Jack Osbourne are contributing correspondents.

Yes, the news producer who once worked with Walter Cronkite is telling Ozzy's kid what to do.

Kaplan brushed aside a question about whether some people in the television news business might consider his current gig a comedown.

"Oh, God no," he said. "By no means. People who say that don't get it. It's a great privilege to be asked to do this program. It's the only serious program in this industry. It's a serious attempt to report on music in a credible way."

He said he's having a blast.

"In many ways, what Fuse is attempting to do with this show is more cutting edge than what any of the networks are doing," he said. "We're not starting a magazine show. We're not tinkering with the evening news."

The show will also have studio guests and music performances. Kaplan has hired Audrey Gruber, a former CBS News and CNN producer, to eventually take over for him when the show is up and running.

Google faces legal action over alleged secret iPhone tracking | The ...

By Josh Halliday, The Guardian
Sunday, January 27, 2013 13:40 EST

?

Google is facing a fresh privacy battle in the UK over its alleged secret tracking of the internet habits of millions of iPhone users.

An estimated 10 million Britons could have grounds to launch a privacy claim over the way Google circumvented Apple?s security settings on the iPhone, iPad and desktop versions of its Safari web browser to monitor their behaviour.

At least 10 British iPhone users have started legal proceedings and dozens more are being lined up, according to Dan Tench, the lawyer behind the action at the London-based firm Olswang.

?This is the first time Google has been threatened with a group claim over privacy in the UK,? Tench told the Guardian. ?It is particularly concerning how Google circumvented security settings to snoop on its users. One of the things about Google is that it is so ubiquitous in our lives and if that?s its approach then it?s quite concerning.?

A letter before action has been sent to Google executives in the US and UK on behalf of two users, including Judith Vidal-Hall, the privacy campaigner and former editor of Index on Censorship. Another 10 are preparing to launch proceedings, and plans are afoot for a group to form an umbrella privacy action.

The legal action comes just months after Google was hit with a $22.5m fine in the US over a privacy breach between summer 2011 and spring 2012.

Google has admitted it intentionally sidestepped security settings on Apple?s Safari web browser that blocked websites from tracking users through cookies ? data stored on users? computers that show which sites they have visited. Security researchers revealed in February 2012 that Google?s DoubleClick advertising network was intentionally stored these cookies on users? computers without their consent.

Although the legal bill for Google is likely to be small compared with last year?s profits of $10.7bn (?6.8bn), the damage will be significant given the millions of iPhone users in Britain at the time. The exact figure for compensation is not known and will depend on a number of factors.

Alexander Hanff, a privacy campaigner working on the legal claims, said: ?This group action is not about getting rich by suing Google, this lawsuit is about sending a very clear message to corporations that circumventing privacy controls will result in significant consequences. The lawsuit has the potential of costing Google tens of millions, perhaps even breaking ?100m in damages given the potential number of claimants ? making it the biggest group action ever launched in the UK.?

Lawyers for claimants in the UK have ordered Google to reveal how it used the private information it secretly obtained, how much personal data was taken, and for how long. It is understood the claimants are suing Google for breaches of confidence and breach of privacy, computer misuse and trespass, and breach of the Data Protection Act 1998.

News of the legal action was first reported by the Sunday Times. Vidal-Hall, who could not be reached by the Guardian, was quoted as saying Google was guilty of ?electronic stalking?. She added: ?It angers me that our data is either being sold or passed on to third parties.?

A Facebook group called Safari Users Against Google?s Secret Tracking has vowed to hold Google to account for the tracking. It said: ?Google deliberately undermined protections on the Safari browser so that they could track users? internet usage and to provide personally tailored advertising based on the sites previously visited. There was no way to know that Google did this. In fact, they made it clear that they did not do this on the Safari browser.?

It continued: ?It could mean for many users that surprises such as engagements, presents and holidays were destroyed when partners looked at their computers and saw display ads based on sites previously visited. There are many examples of the inappropriate consequences of such intrusion.?

Google is no stranger to damaging privacy battles, having being censured for snooping on Wi-Fi users with its StreetView cars and the failed launch of its email social network, Google Buzz.

Google declined to comment. A statement released by the company at the time of the $22.5m fine in July claimed it had ?collected no personal information? with the cookies.

Imagine Changes Hypnosis: Best Recipe for Self-Improvement #2: Recall and Re-use

Clients who work on their self-improvement with me, learn that recall and re-using are the components of the second step.

?

Recall a time when you felt desire. You will use the same technique to describe the fine details of your recollection.

Try this:

  1. Breathe in to the count of 6, hold for 6 and exhale to your internal count of 18.
  2. Repeat 3 times.
  3. Close your eyes and recall a time, an event where you felt intense desire.
  4. If you?ve competed step# 1, you?ll recall that finding the specific details of the event is the object.
  5. The better you get at defining, writing down the smallest distinction of this experience, the closer you?ll be to self-improvement at a core level.
  6. You?ll want the juice of desire and recall to be easily accessed.
  7. Re-using refers to giving the event you?ve identified a single anchor, something like snapping your fingers and the emotion attached to it is at your finger tips.
  8. Remember the event, condense it to snapping the fingers
  9. Re-use the recollection by just snapping the fingers, no need to slog through the details.

This Is the First Live Recording of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit

Few bands have so fundamentally affected the American music scene—with a single song, no less—as Nirvana did in 1991 with the debut of Smells Like Teen Spirit. The Beatles did it in 1964 with "Please Please Me" and set off the British Invasion, Grandmaster Flash did it in 1981 with "The Message" and brought Hip-Hop to the masses. More »

Photographer killed shooting Ferrari linked to Bieber

By Daniel Strieff, NBC News

A paparazzo was struck by a car and killed after taking photos of a white Ferrari believed to belong to pop star Justin Bieber on a busy Los Angeles street, police told NBC News on Wednesday.

Madeline Nightingale, the watch commander of the Los Angeles Police Department?s West Traffic Bureau, said the photographer was pronounced dead at UCLA Medical Center shortly after Tuesday night's collision.

Bieber's vehicle was not involved in the crash, officials said.

Justin Bieber was not in the car at the time of Tuesday's incident, police said.

The deceased, a white male in his late 20s, was not named pending notification of next of kin, she said.

?From what we understand, the car was owned by Justin Bieber, but he was not in the vehicle at the time,? Nightingale said.

A call by The Associated Press to a spokesperson for the singer was not immediately returned. Bieber's Twitter feed made no mention of the incident early Wednesday.

Police would offer no information on the Ferrari?s driver except to say the individual was believed to be a friend of the 18-year-old Canadian singer.

The incident occurred about 5:45 p.m. local time (8:45 p.m. ET) Tuesday after a California Highway Patrol officer flagged the Ferrari for speeding on the northbound 405 Freeway, Nightingale said. The car then exited at Sepulveda Boulevard and Getty Center Drive, she said.

During the traffic stop, the photographer crossed the busy Sepulveda thoroughfare, which runs?parallel?to the 405, and attempted to shoot photos of the vehicle?s occupants from a perch on the narrow divider, Nightingale said.

The Highway Patrol officer on the scene repeatedly warned the man that his position was dangerous, she said.

The man was then struck by a car traveling southbound on Sepulevda, Nightingale said.

Justin Bieber is the most googled person on earth. The pop star started as a viral sensation. He and his manager, Scooter Braun, sit down with Ryan Seacrest to discuss Bieber's journey and his future.

No charges were expected to be filed against the motorist, who stopped her car to attempt to administer assistance, Nightingale told NBC News. The driver was a woman with two young children in the vehicle, Nightingale said.

Complete US coverage from NBC News

The scene was still behind held at around 12:30 a.m. local time Wednesday (3:30 a.m. ET), she said. The investigation had been handed over from the West Traffic Bureau to the LAPD?s Multi-Disciplinary Collision Investigation Team, she said.

?We are going methodically to take our time to get everything we need to get the investigation resolved,? Nightingale added.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Samsung Galaxy Note II purportedly reaching South Korea in brown and red

Yes, the black Galaxy Note II may have been more wishful thinking than reality, but that doesn't mean Samsung is sticking to a narrow palette for its extra-large flagship. A supposed magazine page in South Korea shows both a brown Note II (already available in Japan) and a previously unseen red model headed to the country at an unspecified point in the future. The claim sounds promising for those who've wanted more options than gray and white. All the same, we'll remain skeptical unless the new colors are made official -- Samsung hasn't commented on the authenticity of the page, and the original Korean forum post has disappeared without a trace. We can't help but hope it's real, though, if just for the chance of another smartphone designed for vampires.

LaCie Porsche Design P'9223 Slim

The LaCie Porsche Design P'9223 Slim ($149 list) is a sleekly designed external solid-state drive (SSD), and it's quite speedy while transferring data to your slim laptop or ultrabook. If you bought your laptop for portability, as well as making a design statement, this is the drive to consider. It's pricey on a dollar per gigabyte basis, but it won't keep you waiting for the HD videos you store on it. It can also kick-start a conversation about design with the folks next you in the coffee shop, if you're into that sort of thing.

Design and Features
The P'9223 Slim essentially looks like a sleek block of aluminum with black plastic plugs on opposite sides. The solid aluminum protects the SSD chips inside, while the plastic houses the USB 3.0 connector and some of the drive's branding. At about 0.4 by 5 by 3 inches (HWD), it's one of the slimmest external drives we've reviewed in a pocket drive form factor, infinitesimally smaller than the G-Technology G-Drive Slim. It's a smidge longer (but thinner) than the Western Digital My Passport Edge (500GB) . While the G-Drive Slim and WD My Passport Edge are rounded and have a sandwich construction, the P'9223 Slim sports a unibody construction with sharp edges. A slit cut into the P'9223 Slim's body lets a drive light shine through.

The drive has a 120GB capacity, which is much smaller than the spinning drives in the G-Drive Slim (500GB), the Seagate Backup Plus Portable Drive for Mac (1TB) , and WD My Passport Edge. The 120GB is enough to back up 128GB and 64GB Apple MacBook Air laptops, as well as some SSD-equipped ultrabooks and tablets. However, the drive is a little short of capacity if your laptop has a spinning hard drive, which tend to run to higher capacities?think 320GB or more. In all these cases, you could use the P'9223 Slim as supplemental storage.

The drive starts by auto-loading the LaCie Setup program when you first plug it in. It asks you to partition the drive FAT32 or HFS+ with a sliding scale so you can either use it with PCs, Macs, or a combination of both. We set the drive as an HFS+ drive (Mac format) for our testing. LaCie also prompts you to install an optional simple backup program, encryption software, and a link to LaCie's Wuala online storage service (10GB is included). You can choose to use LaCie's automatic backup program, or use the backup included with Windows 8 or Mac OS X. Like most Mac-oriented drives, OS X asks you if you want to use the drive with Time Machine automatically.

Performance
The P'9223 Slim returned speedy read speeds using the AJA System Test, with a 435 MBps read speed, and a 198 MBps write speed over USB 3.0. These speeds are very close to the Editors' Choice-winning LaCie Rugged USB 3.0 Thunderbolt Series. The P'9223 Slim was very fast in our drag and drop copy test, taking only 13 seconds to transfer our 1.22 GB test folder. This makes the drive a great companion to an SSD-equipped laptop, as you won't be waiting for your data for any significant period of time. Short of a dual-drive Thunderbolt external SSD, the P'9223 Slim is one of the fastest external drives available, much faster than a USB key or spinning hard drive.

If you must have your data transferred now, the LaCie Porsche Design P'9223 Slim is an ?ber-portable way to transport data to and from your MacBook Air or Windows ultrabook. It's very stylish, and will appeal to anyone who enjoys seeing the Porsche Design brand on his or her stuff. That said, the P'9223 Slim's more expensive LaCie Rugged brother is more flexible, with both Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 ports, and can take the bumps and drops of real life better. This is really the drive for those who follow Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier's Modernist design aesthetic.

COMPARISON TABLE
Compare the LaCie Porsche Design P'9223 Slim with several other hard drives side by side.

Are You About To File For Personal Bankruptcy? See These Tips First!

A lot of people see bankruptcy in a negative way, but it is really a good solution in certain situations. A financial catastrophe, like a major medical emergency, can cause someone to face bankruptcy. If that is your situation, you can find help by using the advice in this article.

Proceed with your bankruptcy plans even if you obtain new employment before your filing date. Bankruptcy may be the solution for you, even with your changed circumstances. Your timing can make a tremendous difference when filing for personal bankruptcy. If your filing is processed before you actually start making your higher salary, your repayment terms won?t reflect that new income source.

Be certain that bankruptcy truly is your best option. You may find consolidating your debt may be simpler. Going through a bankruptcy is a long and stressful process. Remember that your credit will be affected by the mark of personal bankruptcy for a long time. Because of this, you need to think of bankruptcy as a nuclear option; that is, a last resort.

Don?t leave all the details in your lawyer?s hands. It?s very important for you to understand what is going on throughout the bankruptcy process, even if your lawyer is providing all of the guidance for your actions. You may be tempted to hand over the reins to your attorney, but keep in mind that your future is actually at stake.

Be certain you are totally aware of the laws of bankruptcy before you file. For instance, for 365 days before filing, no one is able to receive assets from the filer. Not only that, but the filer cannot lawfully accrue additional debt just prior to filing.

If you have fears that you will lose your car, ask your lawyer about the possibility of lowering your car payments. Most of the time Chapter 7 bankruptcy will allow your payments to be lowered. The vehicle must have been obtained more than 90 days before filing and be a loan with high interest. You must also have consistent work history.

You may end up losing more than you bargained for when you file a bankruptcy claim, so be sure that you know just which assets may be taken before filing. The federal statutes covering bankruptcy can tell you exactly which assets are exempt from forfeiture to pay off creditors. It?s crucial to read that list before filing to see which of your prized possessions can be seized. If you don?t read it, you could have nasty surprises pop up later due to your prized possessions being seized.

It?s important that you understand that bankruptcy is not a way to get out of paying tax debt. Filing for bankruptcy does not exempt you from paying your taxes. These filers think they?ll never have to actually pay that money back as it is now part of the credit card debt. Unfortunately, you?ll just end up having to pay your credit card balance plus interest.

Lots of individuals who filed bankruptcy vow to never again use credit cards or lines of credit ever again. The fallacy in this thinking is that credit is needed to improve your credit history again. Good credit is needed to make major purchases, such as those for homes and automobiles. However, if you don?t use credit, you will be unable to establish a good credit history, which is necessary in order to make those purchases. Get one credit card and use it wisely to get on the right path.

You can stop unwanted calls from creditors in debt collectors by filing for personal bankruptcy. The stress of excessive debt can be too much to bear. Utilizing bankruptcy protection can often be the way to keep your mind at ease as you go through the process.

After exhausting every avenue for resolving your financial debts, bankruptcy may be a necessity. You need not stress out, if your circumstances have brought you here due to things outside your personal control. This article contains many useful tips you need to know about before you make your decision.

You should see that it will be far easier if you know as much as you can about the world of stock market trading; this is where you should come for information. Be sure to read the whole article again for best results. Your life will be much easier with this information.
